The Gilded Owl began as Andy Goldsborough’s personal design blog in 2012. Bucking the trend of soundbites and captions, Goldsborough opted for long-form writing, which quickly garnered a following among the design cognoscenti. In his inaugural post, Goldsborough recalls traversing the South with his mother to visit estate sales. His earliest acquisition was a Fratelli Levaggi "Chiavari chair”. As if his fate was sealed among the stars, The Gilded Owl is today the exclusive dealer for furniture made by the Levaggi family, and Goldsborough still has his original ‘Chiavari’.

Born in the American South, Goldsborough presents high design in warm, hospitable climes far removed from the white-cube gallery. A graduate of interior design at Auburn College in Alabama, Goldsborough’s eye is keenly focused on fabrication, an approach honed as much by childhood estate sales with his mother, as by training under design luminaries such as Clodagh and Annabelle Selldorf, and his time spent as a Professor at the renowned Parsons School, where he taught a popular “Materials and Finishes” course.

In 2014, Goldsborough aligned with close friend and Art Advisor, Elizabeth Moore to create a living iteration of The Gilded Owl, when Goldsborough was tapped to design Moore’s house in Hudson, New York. Once a ship captain’s residence on Warren Street, Goldsborough re-envisioned the1785 federal style house with a new footprint. The bottom floor of Moore’s home was transformed into a house gallery for art and design; thus The Gilded Owl was born. The space became an immediate international success, and contributed to making Hudson a singular design destination.

Goldsborough has expanded his practice in product design, fashioning a line of abstracted camouflage rugs, in collaboration with Joseph Carini Carpets, which pay homage to both Andy Warhol and his late ex-partner Stephen Sprouse. Having come of age in New York in the late 20th century on the cusp of the millennium, Goldsborough’s personal work is unified by a cool, downtown, East Village sensibility. Along with private label goods, The Gilded Owl also offers an evolving section of small goods curated by Goldsborough that are exclusive to his gallery. Today, Goldsborough designs out of the loft, upstairs at The Gilded Owl, and his studio serves an intimate, invite-only exhibition space where he shows his most coveted pieces.

After a successful pop-up in Los Angeles in collaboration with indie-favorite textile studio Voutsa in 2019 led to an extended tryst with the city, Goldsborough ultimately made the leap to open a permanent space on trendy Beverly Blvd in 2020. Moving west to embrace the design energy and creative dialogue of Los Angeles, and accelerated by the opportunity for change which came from 2020’s year of uncertainty, Gilded Owl is now perched on a coveted block for LA’s design enthusiasts.

Known for thematic presentations, the name ‘Gilded Owl’ serves as a metaphor, channeling the animal’s keen, watchful eyes, while ‘gilding’ plays to Goldsborough’s focus on finish and details. The platform remains an extension of the designer’s palate, with an emphasis on mid-century Italian works. Goldsborough’s renowned passion and academic bona fides have earned him the exclusive representation of iconic Italian heritage design brands, including the Gio Ponti estate.
